Black or White Shingles

Black or White Shingles

Jun 05, 2013

As roofing contractors, we are frequently asked whether there is an energy difference in shingling with white or black shingles.  We advise our customers that, in our opinion, the biggest influence on roof temperature is climate and ventilation.  There is no appreciable effect on energy consumption because we live in a moderate climate zone.  Attic ventilation and insulation determine how much energy is used rather than shingle color.

A few years ago, a manufacturer did a study and concluded that with a properly ventilated attic space, there was only a 2 degree difference in the internal living space between black and white shingles.

In summary, what you need to know is that ventilation and insulation trump color choices, as well as the climate in which you live.  Ventilation is king and added insulation is a bonus.  Pick the color that pleases you.
