Should You Replace Siding or Windows First?
There are many exterior remodeling projects that can improve the value, condition, and appearance of your home. For example, replacing siding and windows are among the most common.
If both of these are on your radar, you may have an important question on your mind: should you replace siding or windows first?
While there’s no right or wrong answer, in a perfect world you’d tackle both projects at the same time. However, this isn’t always possible. In this case, you need to understand what you’re up against.
If you have the option, it’s best to install new windows first. Here’s why: it gives the contractor the opportunity to easily set the windows in place and then finish off all the capping that surrounds the windows.
If you install the siding first – which is perfectly acceptable – the capping on your existing windows could be damaged, thus leaving you with some repair costs.
Here’s something else to think about: if you replace the siding first, some of it may need removed when it’s time to install new windows. This often comes into play when your contractor goes to add the moisture barrier behind the siding.
Make your decision based on what’s best for your home. For example, if you have new siding but old windows, it’s likely that you’ll replace your windows first. It doesn’t make since to get rid of your new siding just for the sake of doing so.
