What’s the Best Way to Prevent Ice Dams?
Nov 27, 2019In Virginia, you can expect cold, snowy and icy weather to impact you throughout the winter months. While you’re doing your best to keep warm, pay close attention to the affect that ice is having on your home.
For example, ice dams can form on your roof, thus causing a variety of issues if you don’t take care of them in a timely manner. Here’s what you need to do:
· Take action outside: To start, make sure you remove snow from the roof. Using a roof rake is the easiest way of doing so, but be careful that you don’t damage roofing materials. And remember, your safety always comes first.
· Take action inside: Once your current problem is solved, consider taking steps to reduce the chance of it happening again. This starts with making the ceiling airtight, thus reducing the amount of warm air that flows from your living space into the attic.
· Increase the amount of insulation in your attic: When you increase the ceiling insulation, you reduce heat loss by conduction. And when that happens, there’s a smaller chance of ice dams becoming a problem.
