WINTER HAS ARRIVED: FROZEN PIPES
It looks like winter has finally hit us, and in order to avoid frozen pipes, take the following precautions:
- Turn your outside faucets off from inside valves.
- Remove all hoses from the outside faucets and drain any remaining water from the faucet.
- Check around the house for other unheated water lines.
- When the weather is extremely cold, let the cold water drip from the faucet that feeds off the exposed pipes. Even a trickle of water may prevent pipes from freezing.
- Keep your thermostat at the same temperature for day and night. If you turn the heat back at night and the temperature drops, it could cause pipes to freeze and break.
- If you turn on a faucet and you get only a drip or no water, you are probably looking at a frozen pipe.
- Make sure the main water valve is open because as the ice begins to melt, it will flow through the frozen area.
- Your best bet is to call a plumber to assist you in melting the ice and to check over pipes for cracks and leaks.
- Don’t get crazy with blow torches and space heaters. In the long run, it is safer and more practical to hire a professional to protect your home and its belongings.
