Common Causes of Ladder Accidents at Home

May 01, 2019

With warm weather here for the foreseeable future, you may find yourself regularly using a ladder around home. For example, if you need to clean your gutters, a ladder is the best way to reach them.

While a ladder is a helpful tool, it’s also a dangerous one. It only takes one mistake to cause a serious accident that results in injury or even death.

Here are three of the most common causes of ladder accidents at home:

·      Improper setup: For example, setting a ladder on uneven ground greatly increases the chance of an accident, especially if you’re climbing high. Level, firm ground is a must.

·      Using a damaged or defective ladder: Don’t assume that your ladder is in good working condition, as these tools can wear out (or break) over time. For instance, a missing or cracked rung can cause trouble.

·      Carrying a heavy load: Don’t carry a heavy load up or down a ladder, as this can result in losing your balance. Examples include heavy tools and shingles.

If you’re not comfortable using a ladder, such as to inspect your roof for damage, call a professional for assistance. This is much better than taking a risk and finding yourself injured in an accident.
