It doesn’t matter if you have an aging roof or one that is relatively new, a leak is a possibility. Sure, this is more likely with a roof that has seen better days, but even newer homes experience this problem every now and again.
This leads to an important question: what’s the first sign of a roof leak?
This varies from home to home, based on a variety of factors ranging from the location of the leak to the structure itself. While it’s important to keep your eyes open for all potential signs of a leak, here are a few of the more common:
– Water spots on your walls or ceilings: If you suspect a leak, head into your attic for a closer look from the inside. This may be all it takes to confirm your suspicions.
– Missing shingles: A missing shingle (or several) doesn’t always result in a leak, but there’s a good chance this will happen if it’s not taken care of in the near future. Depending on the size and positioning of your home, you may be able to spot missing shingles without ever getting on a ladder (which is the safest way of doing it).
– Damaged siding: Is water seeping behind your siding? Is the siding itself becoming damaged as a result of too much water exposure? Don’t assume that this is an exterior-only issue, as it could also be causing trouble inside your home.
No one wants to learn that they have a roof leak, but it happens. And if you spot any of these signs – among others – don’t want to take action. The sooner you address the issue, the sooner you can put your mind at ease.
