Fairfax County has been chosen as the host city for the World Police and Fire Games (WPFG) this summer. This is an international sporting event that occurs every other year, and it is one of the largest multi-sporting events in the world. This is the first time the events have been held in our area, and Canada and China will be the next host cities in 2017 and 2019.
WPFG will feature 12,000 law enforcement, firefighter and first responder athletes from 70 different countries who will be competing in 60 sports in 53 area venues. With over 30,000 expected visitors to this area, Fairfax County Fire Chief Bill Bowers anticipates that over 4,000 volunteers will be needed to help make this a successful event. This has been many years in the planning, and it is very unlikely that we will see these “Olympics” in our area again.
Opening Ceremonies will be held at RFK Stadium, and Closing Ceremonies will be held at Wolf Trap in Fairfax, Virginia.
